First thing first som det heter.

hello!

there is already working "accumulator of heat"

http://www.deltasib.ru/accumulator/

it contains 3-5 l of hot antifreese from cooling system, and keeps it hot till 24-36 hours. before engine start, electric pump delivers hot antifreeze from accumulator to main system, and then engine starts much more easy.

if you have some heat accumulator, system can be made by everyone - you need a electric valve and electric pump.

PS i think you can use usual 3-5 L thermos, with vacuumed steel (not glass!) bulb.

Bild

PPS There is a another canadian system Centaur, but i can't find it.

their site http://www.centaurthermal.com not working.

Intersetting but not available here I am afraid. The volume is not very large, only 3,7 or 5,1 liter! If google translate understood correctly it takes 60 hours before it has lost all its heat, not bad at all!!

Google translate discribes that the thermos for cooling fluid as "a doublecase cylindrical vessel with a high-vacuum-powder insulation".

Sounds good, but is it correct? Vacuum powder isolation seems contradictive, stainless thermos bottles use vacuum as isolation which works very good but are not more than 1,5 liter I think, vacuum powder seems odd what can that be micro baloons with vacuum inside?

What is the price of suc a kit in Russia is it 6500 rubel? That seems very reasonable.

The waterheater I was referring to is does not specify its heat loss, its specs are:

Citat:
Varmvattenberedare, 10L
Emaljerad, rostskyddad tank med värmeelement av koppar. För väggmontering. Utv R15 CC 100 mm. Justerbar temp 30 - 75 grader (Max 80) Arbetstryck 7,5 Bar. Säkerhetsventil mot övertryck. Skydd mot torrkörning och överhettning. IPX4. Effekt 1500W Vikt 9,5 Kg, 340 x290 mm
kr 649:-

meaning:
Citat:
Water heater, 10L
Enameled, rust-protected tank with heating element made of copper. For wall mounting. Pipe connection R15, CC 100 mm. Adjustable temp 30 to 75 degrees (Max 80) Working pressure 7,5 bar. Safety valve against excess pressure. Protection against dry running and overheating. IPX4. Power 1500W Weight 9.5 kg, 340 x290 mm
SEK 649:-

The advantage would be the heating element which can be used to reheat the water if the car has been standing for a longer periond or maybe even on 12V (ca 5W) to reduce thermal losses?

Obviously one would at least need an extra circulation pump that can withstand 1 bar and the heat and these are expensive too.

How many liters contains all your cooling system? i think 5-7 liters.
Thermos will replace 50-90% of total cold antifreeze by new and hot, in 20-30 seconds. cold antifreeze will go to termos. i think it is good solution.

yes, translation is correct - wacuum-powder thermoisolation used in big containers with liquid nitrogenium and other containers, there is spesial powred between 2 walls. this construction is stronger than just vacuum - in big containers it is important.

i think you can find pump, valve and big thermos (or maybe 2 not big :) ) easyly and made this system.

or i can ask a produser to send this complete set to you.
6500 rubles = $ 225 (for complete set).

Another nice -but expensive- little 5l (stainless steel) water heater/termos is this one, with biuild in 3kW element that would heit the tank in only 6 minutes!
http://www.osohotwater.com/uk/products/ ... ments.html

But you are perfectly right that it would not be to difficult to build something similar if you do not need the electric heating you only need a nice tank you only need to isolate it!

A closed 10l expension vessel as used in central heating systems (with a rubber membrane) with added isolation could be the base of an even better? thermos system.

With the tank connected to the lowest part of the coolingsystem and airpump one could empty the coolingsystem into the tank to store the heat and put it back again when it is time to start the engine! I suppose that would be even better than replacing cold fluid with warm cooling fluid .

Prius sold in North America also have a small thermos-like flask (CHHS - coolant heat storage system) that stores some warm engine coolant at shutdown (makes some whirring noises when the car is off, concerns some new owners), and re-pumps it back into the system at startup to help warm things up faster.)
Här är det bilder som förklarar systemet.
http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/Hybrid04.pdf

it is wrong to let air into cooling system.

I knew about the Prius' coolant heat storage tank in the US version but nice to see its function discribed. I doubt that it would be cheaper to source a used Prius tank pump etc from a scrapyard in the US compaired to the Russian heat storage system.

The specific heat of ethanol is not as high as coolant but when the fueltank is full, there is a lot an preheated fuel makes starting easier too. So another option might be to isolate he fueltank and use a heat exchanger to heat the fuel when the engine is warm and vice versa before starting when the engine is cold.

Unfortunately the boiling point of petrol is so low that it is not really possible unless one would use that problem as a feature by distilling the lighter fractions from the E85 and use that as a special cold start coctail :D :D

You do not have to let in "new" air into the system, the system could still be a closed system if you'd connect the "gas-side" of the storagetanks membrane with a tube/hose to the cars' normal expansion tank.

... and add a 7-10 l air tank? :) modern cars do not have place under hood at all! :(

and do not forget about corrosion.

everyone using extra antifreeze - i think it is the best solution.

No your tank does not get any larger at all, you just do not need any extra coolant.

Obormot skrev:

There will not be more corrosion because it still is a closed system, the antifreeze also contains corrosion inhibitors.

Obormot skrev:

Maybee so, but the extra weight of the extra antfreeze can not be an advantage.

That cheap Biltema waterheater seems very interesting!..
I have looked at another 10 l one at Jula (not cheap, and not in stock) since I'm now planning on installing a "thermos" in my current winter car; a 1991 Volvo 245. :)

This could be a fairly easy setup if i just let the heater sit on the backseat floor and connect it via hoses in series with the heater core.
I already have some spare 12 V water pumps lying around an one of those in series and i should have a working system!

I was thinking of leaving the heater always plugged in at home (easiest solution) and let the pump be controlled by a timer that is set to start maybe 5-10 minutes before departure? Or maybe longer since the heating element will kick in and continue to warm up the engine.
The same thing at work; but there i must rely om that the "thermos" has stored and kept some heat for me.
