hello!

we can install platinum-coated wire in intake collector and inject ethanol on it - and ethanol will burn without flame, just on the wire, not in the air.

wire will heat up and it will heat air in intake collector.

for starting the reaction, wire need to be heated up - we can plug 12 V to it, it will take 1-2 seconds. after reaction is startted, 12v not need.

so we using fuel from main tank, not using much electro power, it is simple and reliable.

and we need very low quantity of fuel. extremally very low.

Platinum is extremely expensive though...

we need platinum coated wire, not platinum wire.

price of this heater is about $15, it can give 60C air in 8-14 hours.

working on the gasoline for lighters.

this heater costs abou $90, it can give 1000 w of power.

How much is a platinum coated wire then?

Inläggsrubrik:

i think very thin layer.

i worked with tungsten wire, coated with gold and platinum, used in old-style copiers (corotron), and this wire is cheap.

i plan to find some already-made heater, if i will not find one - i will take this wire and made it.

I like your creative out of the box thinking Obermot, very inspiring!

Some spin-of thinking:

It would be nice if the exhaust catalist could be employed in some way because that could potentially shorten or even eliminate the light off delay of the catalyst, which is otherwise delayed due to ethanols lower exhoust gas temperature.

On http://herkules.oulu.fi/isbn9514269543/ ... 03460.html under 2.3.4. Cold start and catalyst fast light-off I see an extra preconverter
Bild

With EGR after that converter you would already get hot gases into the engine, however you would need too run the starter first to get fuel into that catalyst and heat it to several hundred degrees according to the light of temperature graphs here http://herkules.oulu.fi/isbn9514269543/html/x2192.html which would use too much battery power.

Maybe a precatalyst could be a combined ethanol powered heater similar to a Webasto stand heater. If it was water cooled the water could preheat the engine and the exhaust gas recirculation used to preheat a the air intake too.

$74.99

it already have electric blower and electronic start.

it working on gas cartrige, but i think it can be easy converted to E85 or ethanol.

it can be installed near intake inlet, before cranking, we can turn it on and it will blow hot air into intake maifold, then we can start engine.

and we can turn heater off after engine warms up.

or we can use just spare catalytic wire element:

I think that the electric start probably is a spark that ignites a small propane flame (like a lighter) to preheat the catalyst. That would not work with cold ethanol.

so, we can use it "as is" - i think 1 gas cartrige will be enough for 1-2 month.

it can work up to 7 hours, so if we will use it 5 min. at every start, it will be 80-90 cold starts.

and it is much better, than just use additional tank with gasoline or gas fuel for start engine - starting of cold engine will take MUCH more fuel.

or we can use spare wire-net in intake mainfold, some fuel injector and small glow plug for starting of reaction.

P.S. Platinum Coated Nickel Wire using in DIY fuel cells.

wi can make a spiral, place it into mailfold, and connect in to 12 V for heating, i think it will take 1-2 sec. than we can use usual injector or electric valve for inject fuel onto the spiral - and it will start to heat.

Citat:
3,000 BTU unit runs up to 7 hours on 16.4oz. Coleman propane cylinder (sold separately)

That is 880 watt in 7h (6,152 kwh, 22,1472 MJ) on 468 g propane.

The energy density of propane is 46.44 MJ per kilogram according to wikipedia, 46,44 x 0,468 = 21,73392 so it is pretty efficient ca 102% ;-)

Not sure if these Bild
are worldwide available, but it should work on another propane bottle as well.

You could do some compairing tests; run a 880w hairdryer for example 2 min in the intake and try a coldstart or release 2/60 * 1/7 * 468g = 2,23g propane into the intake and try to start.

I would think that releasing some gas will proove more efficient than the föhn/heater. You will not need to run the engine on only on propane until the engine is warm, the propane is only needed to help ignite the ethanol, just like petrol in E85.

Nice, but how much heat would a wire make?

i already try to use hairdryer (1200W) for cold-start - turn it on, insert into intake and start.

works wery good.
