Så vi hade rätt hela tiden, det är soppan som ska värmas, inte luften... 8) :

Eliminates the need for an auxiliary gasoline cold-start fuel system
on vehicles that use E100 fuel
• Enables E100 cold starting below 18°C without the need to
add gasoline
• No pre-crank heating time is required unlike competitive heated
rail injection systems
• Helps reduce hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon-monoxide (CO)
emissions to help manufacturers meet U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency cold start testing at 20°C (EPA 75)

i think also can be developed heated tip for usual injectors.

with controlled temperature. not bigger than temp. of self-ignition of fuel.

or stock metal tip can be used as heater, something like this:

Interesting idea Obermoth, but the tip is just iron I think? The electric resistance would be very low and the currents need to be very high (=thick wires) in order to get enough heat.

yes, just iron - and it will be very small and powerful heater device :-)

of course external control device needed for preventing of overheating of tip.

it can work with additional thermal sensor or by measuring of resistanse of "heater" between "power impulses".
bigger temp. of heater - bigger resistanse.

also heater can be done like some loops of wire on metal injector tip - it can be easier, there is no need to solder wires to injector. and easier to measure resistance.

Now we are talking, Obormot!
But I think actually, that the best effect would be if we could heat the other end of the injector instead.
Because then we would heat all fuel in the injector+ a bit would go even up into the fuel rail.
Then there is more stored, warm fuel availble than if trying to heat all in a very short moment before it leaves the injector.
The storage potential is one of the reasons why I preferred a FR solution like Bosch in the first place.
But maybe storage would be enough if there was heating of all injector, or its main part, where most fuel is.
Maybe we could buy one Delphi injector and find out how they solved things...

when we will heat this end of injector, we can even evaporate (boil) ethanol instead just heating.
this will be much better for cold start.

Autoignition point of Gasoline (Petrol): 246–280 °C, ethanol: 362 °C

so we can have safe temperature up to 180-200 °C on heated tip..
much better than 80-90 °C in fuelrail or in upper end of injector.

Are you sure? I think that the valveseat of the injector is in the tip of the injector so the fuel in the tip is still under pressure.

When the fuel would become hot enough so that it boils (under pressure) the delivered amound vaporised fuel would become very small compaired to when it is liquid.

Injectors sometimes do not have a metal body at the tip which would make it not very suitable for external heating?

Inläggsrubrik:  Re: Delphi Multec® 3.5 Heated Tip PortFuel Injector

If we really want to boil the spirit, we should not heat the tip of injector, it would be too warm for the health of its internal components due to the fact that there is too much energy needed to boil the large quantities needed at startup.
So a too high temperature would be needed in the small injector tip in order to store enough heat energy.

Instead, we should then focus on boiling by putting something hot in the spray itself, just like the heating plates that SAAB, Opel and some other were using some years ago in order to improve the cold start emissions for gasoline engines.

However, I doubt that boiling is really needed, we just need to get the temp up to levels where it would ignite after being heated up further during compression, and to minimize the condensation on cold engine parts like inlet ports and cylinder liner. Probably about +50 degrees C inside the injectors would be enough.

Delphi's Heated Injector Technology: The Efficient Solution for Fast Ethanol Cold Starts and Reduced Emissions

De verkar bl a ha jämförd sitt system med Bosch eller Magneti Marellis lösning med uppvärmd fuelrail

Citat:
Vehicle tests have been performed demonstrating that
Delphi's heated tip injector solutions are capable of enabling
cold starts down to an ambient temperature of −5 °C for E100
applications. Starts with a total preheat and crank time of
about 8 s (6 s preheat and 2 s cranking) were attained at −5
°C compared with about 25 s and an engine stall (16 s total
preheat and 8 s total cranking with 1 s reaction time) with a
competitive heated fuel rail system on a similar engine
application. It was also shown that the injector preheating
could be eliminated altogether in exchange for a longer
cranking duration yielding a lesser overall start time (4 s vs. 7
s at 0 °C), while starting could not be achieved without
preheating using the competitive heated fuel rail system
under similar conditions.
