hej ethanol drivers :)

some people in german ethanol forums are diskussing about the oil consumption of their cars.

for those who can read German:

it doesn't matter if the car is a FFV or modified. ie. i know a guy whos Volvo V50 FFV has an oil consumption of 0.8-1 L / 1000km
:shock: and he is not the only one who has detected this phenomen.

my car is chipped with an eprom of the non-turbo engine, and do not need more oil than before.
The normal oil consuption is about 1 L max. on 10.000km, which is a factor of 10 to the values of that C50 FFV.

does anyone have such bad experiences of oil cunsumption ?

No. On my converted cars, Citroën BX 16V '88 and VW Golf '97 , i have not noticed any abnormal oil consumption. The oil consumption of the VW has begun increasing in the last years, but this is quite normal on that type of engines after more than 200 000 km. I think its oil consumtion is now about 0,2-0,4 l/1000 km.

On a FFV car, a Ford Focus '04 with 1,6 l Zetec-SE engine, i have no good statistics yet. It definitely consumes oil, but it doesn't seem to be more than perhaps 0,1 l/1000 km.

However, it is common on modern low friction engines that they have a high oil consumption during the first ten thousand kilometers or so, until the piston rings are properly run-in. A friend's parents bought a Skoda Octavia 1,6 a few years ago, and it had an oil consumption of the same range as the Volvo V50 you mentioned, during its first year.

Neither have I seen any unusual oil consumption. One thing that does not happen with Ethanol is that the fuel doesn't mix and delute the oil.

In a petrol engine the oil level can sometimes actually rise because the oil gets deluted by petrol or just keep the same level, needless to say that the oil/petrol mixture does not lube the engine as well as oil without petrol.

Probably the dilution effect on petrol makes people beleive that the engine don't use any oil..

okay, the cars are new and the pistons are not run-in, that may be a reason.

the dilution effect is, as far as i know, most seen in cars like mine, caused by driving almost short distances or city traffic only.

so i try to let run my Volvo a longer distance, minimum 50km each direction, once a month. To avoid an engine damage i check the oil level every three months, especially when i wanna drive on german highways above 140km/h :P
