Hello,
I've got a 93' Impreza 1.8 litre. Now I want to modifiy it to go on E85.
For this I want to use the Flexitune AutoX4 or Flexitune Sequential, I'm not sure whats better. I think the Auto x4 will run safer because of the Lambda control, so to engine will not run to fatless ???
Some experiences with the two kinds of Flexifuel would be very helpful, thanks.
Is there sombedy who has some experience by modifying a Subaru
car on E85, I've heard that the engine valves should be harded and sometimes it gives problems with the fuel tube and tank?
I would be very grateful for every tip.
Thank you very much and al the best grettings .

If would be helpful if you could tell us the model of the ECU (engine control unit, the engine computer) in your car.

I don't have experience of both, but AutoX4 is a more modern design, which also have a better cold-start function programmed (with temp sensor).

Neither model can prevent the engine from running lean fuel-mixture if the injection system is unable to provide the extra fuel (~30%) needed when converting to E85.
Does your car have Turbo? If not, then don't worry.
If you do have turbo, then you should look into what duty-cycle your fuel-injectors have at maximum engine power.
However, it's complicated. We can provide more explanation if necessary...

I have yet to hear about any engine model that required valves to be hardened. Most often, such rumours has their origins in enging failures because of other reasons than running on E85, but where the unfortunate owner mistakenly attributed it to his recent switch to E85.

It's a non turbo model and it has got a MFI Multipoint Injection.
I tried to find some information about E85 in a longer use on
US Sites but I found nobody who drives E85 for a longer time,
I mean 3-5 years and 100000 Km up. I'm specially interseted
how aluminium works together with ethanol, and if there are
any other problems.
Thank you very much for your threads.
Greetings

Then you don't have to worry about running lean.
Disconnect the cable from one of the injectors and measure the electrical resistance between the contacts in the injector. It should be around 10-14 ohms or around 2 ohm.
If it's 10-14, then you can just plug in the FlexiTune without additional components.

We have several members (not me though) who've driven farther.

Sorry, can't help you with that one, since I'm not a metallurgist. But most aluminium should be fine with water-free, pure ethanol (with gasoline).

Thanks a lot Dr. Mabuse,
your information was very helpful.
So I think I will oder the Flexitune Autox4
Thank a lot and al the best greetings

The only concern with ethanol and aluminium is if aluminium is exposed to absolutely water free ethanol at high temperature (>130C). This only happens in the lab, as there are always traces of water in commercially pure ethanol. This water is sufficient to re-passivate aluminium if passivity breakdown occurs.
